Starting in Uruguay with a simple logistics and storage base in 2006, Montevideo is now the main logistics hub for Aker BioMarine. With 15000m2 warehousing space in total, complete with custom re-packaging facilities it is expected that in coming years the biotech innovator will become one of Uruguay’s biggest exporters by tonnage.
A crucial logistics and distribution hub for Aker BioMarine’s Antarctic operations, krill is taken from harvesting vessels by supply ships and off-loaded in Montevideo up to ten times a year. Taking seventy port workers, just thirty-six hours to offload between 3-4000 MTs of krill meal, it is then forwarded to the brand new 10000m2 Frimosa warehouse, and then onwards to customers worldwide.
Having just successfully completed its debut Antarctic krill harvesting season, Antarctic Endurance, the 130-meter state of the art vessel pays a visit to Montevideo port to celebrate the role Uruguay plays in Aker BioMarine’s global operations. With Antarctic Endurance added to the company’s fleet, volumes into Uruguay are expected to almost double in the coming years.
Matts Johansen, CEO Aker BioMarine, says “Being able to call Uruguay our home-base has enabled us to continuously scale and optimize our operations. It is the foundation of our global supply chain, and so it is really special for Antarctic Endurance to dock here, as a token of appreciation to the Uruguayan team for their expertise, hard work, and commitment.”
Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries, Enzo Benech who attended the event, says: "Companies like Aker BioMarine have many ports to choose from. I am glad that Aker BioMarine chose the infrastructure and location of Montevideo to use the port facilities and perform storage here."
Commenting on the vessel visit Juan Martin Beisso, Aker BioMarine’s General Manager Uruguay, says “Our entire team is thrilled to welcome Antarctic Endurance to Montevideo, the port where the fruits of her labours in the Southern Ocean will be offloaded for years to come. The absolute cutting edge of energy and environmental efficiency, this incredible ship will of course be making even more work for us, but with the investments we have made in our new office and warehouse, we are well prepared.”
Antarctic Endurance is docking Montevideo to take the opportunity to invite key customers and partners onboard for a unique glimpse inside one of the world’s most unique krill harvesting vessels.
