September 26, 2017, Oslo, Norway: The “one size fits all” approach to nutrition and dietary supplementation is dying a slow death, according to many experts, who believe there will be a significant paradigm shift in the years to come. This change will usher in a new era that favors the individual over the masses. Most important, it will help people identify exactly where they need to make up for nutrition gaps and supplement appropriately.

Self-administered testing, which has been on a slow rise for decades has become an important tool for consumers who want to take back control of their health.

“Long chain omega-3s, that is EPA and DHA, are essential for overall health because they play so many roles in the body. Because we don’t make these nutrients in sufficient amounts, we have to get them through the diet. And by not maintaining optimal amounts, everyone is vulnerable to deficiency,” says Dr. Nils Hoem, Chief Scientist at Aker BioMarine.

The Omega-3 Index test is simply a measure of the amount of EPA and DHA in the blood, more specifically red blood cell membranes. A result of 8-12% is associated with better, overall health, and a lower risk for premature death. Anything less than 8% puts consumers in the least desirable risk zones. With the Omega-3 Index test, anyone has the ability to measure their omega-3 levels, and then take the proper steps to devise a regimen that works well for them in order to raise that level.

Aker BioMarine is inviting everyone onsite at SupplySide West to test their omega-3 EPA/DHA levels and take the “30-Day Superba Boost Challenge” at booth Y153. Testing will take place on both days of the show at the Aker BioMarine booth, from 11am-4pm. Test kits and product samples will be available while supplies last.

“Personalized nutrition is the future of the nutrition industry, omega-3s included,” says Dr. Hoem. “We’ve tested the Omega-3 Index of nearly 3000 subjects in our clinical trials, and the results show a distinct advantage for krill oil over other marine source omega-3s. In fact, krill is the best way to increase your Omega-3 Index. Krill oil’s omega-3s are mostly bound to phospholipids, which has a profound effect on how EPA and DHA are delivered in the body. Several studies have demonstrated that phospholipid-bound omega-3s get into the blood quicker and more efficiently. To that end, now is the time to educate consumers about this test and its connection to krill oil, which is why we recently launched an awareness campaign under our new initiative, The Omega-3 Index Project.”

The Aker BioMarine team is also encouraging Supply Side attendees to learn more about omega-3s and future of health and wellness at an exciting panel session on personalized nutrition.

Making Personalized Nutrition a Reality
