A new study published in Lupus Science & Medicine found that krill oil supplements (Superba Boost) improved Omega-3 levels significantly in lupus patients within just one month, compared to those who received a placebo.
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the body’s own tissues, affecting organs like the kidneys, heart, and lungs.
The trial involved 78 adult patients with active lupus, who were randomly assigned to receive either 4 grams of krill oil or a placebo (a vegetable oil mixture) daily for 24 weeks. The participants were monitored for changes in their Omega-3 levels and disease activity. Results showed that krill oil increased the Omega-3 Index significantly in all participants, suggesting it can help correct Omega-3 deficiency in lupus patients.
Although there was no overall decrease in lupus disease activity for all patients, a smaller group of those with more severe lupus saw a temporary reduction in symptoms. While more research is needed, the results suggest that increasing Omega-3 levels may benefit heart health in lupus patients.
Experts believe this study is promising, but patients should not alter their treatment without consulting their doctors.Read more about the study here: Lupus Science & Medicine
Krill are small, shrimp-like creatures that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, which support heart, brain, and joint health, and help reduce inflammation. Krill oil is prized for its high bioavailability, meaning it’s easily absorbed by the body, potentially boosting its health benefits.
