Aker BioMarine welcomes new member to their krill patent family

Back to news

Oslo, 4 October 2019 – Aker BioMarine today announced the allowance by the United States Patent and Trademark Office of one of its most important patent applications, laying claim to clean and concentrated krill oils with >50% phospholipids. This provides strong and important patent coverage for Aker BioMarine’s innovative Superba Boost™ krill oil, as well as an effective tool to protect our customers from product imitations.

One of the fundamental advantages of krill oil is that its omega-3s are mainly bound to phospholipids. Phospholipids help omega-3s integrate into the cells before delivering them to parts of the body that need them the most, such as the brain, heart, eyes and liver.

“First generation krill oils had lower phospholipid levels, but the market is now moving towards higher concentrations and we are now crowning our continuous innovation efforts with yet another important U.S. composition patent,” says Matts Johansen, CEO of Aker BioMarine. “This new patent helps validate that Superba Boost™ is a novel high-quality product.”

The patent allowance is the result of our long-term commitment to innovation and product development. Aker BioMarine’s krill products are backed by more than a decade of science, sustainable krill harvesting operations and the world’s by far largest krill patent portfolio.

Concurrent as Aker BioMarine is granted the Superba Boost patent, the company has decided not to proceed with the Delaware case. This is based on the decision of the Federal Circuit finding missing components of the two patents in the Delaware case. Aker BioMarine will in the coming days take the necessary measures to close the case.

Aker BioMarine strives to produce products that help meet the demands of consumers today. All Superba products are certified 100% sustainable and traceable and produced through a vertically integrated supply chain that is fully owned and controlled by the company.
