Using newly acquired technology called Flexitech(TM), Aker BioMarine, the leading supplier of krill-derived products to the consumer health and wellness and animal nutrition markets, has launched its first krill oil concentrate. Called Superba(TM) Boost Caps, the product contains significantly more phospholipids and omega-3s compared to the previous generation of Superba(TM) Krill Oil. But the best part is that just two capsules of Superba(TM) Boost qualifies for four EU-authorized health claims, including:
- EPA & DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart
- Choline contributes to the maintenance of normal liver function
- Choline contributes to normal lipid metabolism
- Choline contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism
Further, Superba(TM) just received Novel Foods Approval at extended use levels last month, which means that it is the only standard krill oil in the EU allowed to dose more than 250 mg EPA/DHA (up to 3000 mg) per day - the other players in the market cannot go beyond 250 mg.
The combination of our Novel Foods Approval and our new krill concentrate, Superba(TM) Boost, will open numerous market opportunities for us and our customers, who can now take advantage of stronger market positioning backed by EU-authorized health claims. Additionally, krill oil will now become relevant to companies that in the past were reluctant to launch a product due to a difficult regulatory environment.

Earlier this year, Aker BioMarine started using Flexitech(TM) to produce commercial batches out of its new manufacturing facility in the U.S. The first product to come from the new Flexitech(TM) process was Superba(TM) 2, which made its official debut at the Natural Products Expo West show in the U.S. in March. Offering several improvements over traditional krill oils, Superba(TM) 2 possesses enhanced encapsulation properties as well as improved smell, taste and visual appearance.
