Protecting biodiversity. 

We are an omega-3 company powered by one of the world’s most important ecosystems. That comes with responsibility, not just to source sustainably, but to actively protect the ocean we depend on. From our earliest days, we have believed that sustainable krill fishery and a healthy Antarctic ecosystem are not competing interests.

 

Voluntary marine protected areas

Our work with marine protected areas started already in 2018. Working through the Association of Responsible Krill Harvesting Companies (ARK) and in direct collaboration with Greenpeace, we contributed to the creation of a voluntary marine protected zone around critical penguin breeding habitats along the Antarctic Peninsula. Since 2019, the industry has collectively closed 74,000 km² around vulnerable penguin colonies through voluntary measures.

 

Protecting 70% of the Antarctic Peninsula

In 2025 Aker BioMarine took an active role in the proposed Antarctic Peninsula Marine Protected Area covering nearly 70% of the region and 455,957 km² of the Southern Ocean. If adopted, it would become one of the world's largest marine protected areas and contribute significantly toward the UN's global commitment to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030.

 

The Ocean Stewardship Initiative

In January 2026, Aker BioMarine partnered with the Sustainable Markets Initiative, to co-found the Ocean Stewardship Initiative. The Ocean Stewardship Initiative is a platform created to accelerate private-sector leadership for ocean stewardship. The initiative brings together industry leaders to support scalable, science-based solutions for ocean management, with a first focus on advancing a large-scale Marine Protected Area in Antarctica led by Aker BioMarine and Aker QRILL Company.

By demonstrating what is possible in Antarctica, the Ocean Stewardship Initiative aims to build a replicable model for industry-led marine protection around the world. Through this work, Aker BioMarine aims to contribute to global efforts to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030, while demonstrating how industry can play a constructive role in balancing conservation and sustainable use.
