Aion enters into collaboration with Microsoft Norway to scale plastic circularity

Back to news

(Oslo, May, 2023) Aion, an Aker BioMarine spinoff within plastic circularity and circular tech, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Microsoft to pursue joint innovation and explore co-sell opportunities within digital traceability of circular plastic products

AION's digital platform, AION Loop, ensures value chain traceability and documented environmental effects. Aion and Microsoft Norway will work jointly to scale Aion Loop globally. They will also explore how Microsoft’s cloud and AI services can accelerate innovation and the adoption of circular products.

Globally, half of all greenhouse gas emissions and 90% of biodiversity loss are caused by extracting and processing primary raw materials. Moving to more sustainable consumption requires a joint effort across industries, and this relationship seeks to accelerate the transition to more sustainable products.

Accelerate plastic circularity solutions

The world produces around 400 million tonnes of plastic waste every year, and the global demand for plastic continues to grow. There is an urgent need to stop plastic pollution as well as stagger the need for energy intensive plastic production. To tackle these challenges and meet upcoming regulatory tightening, there is a need for a system change that enables increased plastics recycling and circular solutions at industrial scale.

“Aion is in business to drive the transition towards a circular economy in industrial plastics. Value chain traceability and aggregated levels of circularity insights are core elements of this. We are delighted and very proud to partner with Microsoft on this journey. Industrial scale and global impact are both core to Aions growth ambitions. Microsoft has a global industrial outreach unlike any other player, and Microsoft’s own impact ambitions is a testimony to their commitment,” says Runa Haug Khoury, CEO of Aion.

Taking sustainable actions

In 2020 Microsoft announced its goal to achieve zero waste for Microsoft’s direct operations, products and packaging by 2030.

“Microsoft Norway is pleased to see Norwegian technology and companies enabling global sustainable action and we are actively focusing our efforts to empower Aion to scale the great work they are driving to have greater impact to create circular solutions at scale”, says Kristine Dahl Steidel, General Manager of Microsoft Norway.

Steidel continued, “we are a strong supporter of the creation of circular models, not only for us to reach our own sustainability goals but also to allow our technology to enable others to do the same”.

The agreement was signed by Aion CEO Runa Haug Khoury and GM of Microsoft Norway, Kristine Dahl Steidel.
