FROM CATCH TO PRODUCT
Aker BioMarine is the only krill supplier that controls the entire harvesting and production process.
Our supply chain stretches from krill harvesting in Antarctic waters through the logistics hub in Montevideo to our krill oil manufacturing facility in Houston.
Our custom-built vessels produce krill meal immediately after the krill has been brought onboard. This method ensures optimal product quality.
Our wholly owned supply and transport vessel Antarctic Provider delivers our krill products to Montevideo, Uruguay, with limited interruption of harvesting operations. From our logistics hub in Montevideo, products are transported to Houston for further processing or sold directly to customers around the world.
Because we control the entire supply chain, we can trace each end-product back to a precise harvesting location, as recorded by the GPS system onboard each vessel.
HIGHEST STANDARD CERTIFICATION
In 2020, Aker BioMarine received its third consecutive certification with no conditions from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) for its sustainable Antarctic krill fishery following an independent assessment. The company was initially certified in 2010, being the first krill company ever to carry the MSC label.
For the sixth year in a row, the Antarctic krill fishery received an “A” rating for its well-managed fishery from the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP). The independent report states that the fish stocks are listed in “very good condition,” and the Antarctic krill fishery in the Atlantic Southern Ocean is once again singled out as being particularly well-managed.
To us, it makes no sense to take something out of the ocean to improve our health, if it simultaneously compromises the health of the ocean. Ensuring the well-being of the krill biomass and contributing towards a thriving Antarctic ecosystem are among our core priorities.
