Aker BioMarine Granted New Key Patent in the U.S.

Back to news

On November 14, 2017, the United States Patent and Trademark Office issued patent no. 9,816,046 to Aker BioMarine, thus granting the company exclusivity to an important and widely used method of producing krill oil from krill meal that has been stored for 1-36 months prior to extraction.

“This patent is the result of our ongoing adaptation to commercial developments, and upon issuing becomes the most important krill oil production patent in the marketplace,” says Matts Johansen, CEO at Aker BioMarine.

“Aker BioMarine’s krill products are backed up by more than a decade of science, product development, sustainable krill harvesting operations and undisputedly the world’s largest and most important krill patent portfolio,” Johansen adds.

The issuing U.S. patent belongs to the same patent family as Aker BioMarine’s European patent 2144618, which had all 27 claims upheld and reconfirmed by the European Patent Office in October 2017. The European Patent Office confirmed the validity of the patent after thorough review and two oral hearings requested by a competitor, adding significant strength to Aker BioMarine’s global patent family.
